Salt Lake Men: Should You Be Using Propecia?

Salt Lake Men: Should You Be Using Propecia?

I think that every man who has thinning or balding hair should consider using Propecia. In the years from 2006 to 2008 I used Propecia and my hair never looked better. It didn’t happen over night, but after many months I noticed that my hair was coming in thicker and fuller than it had in a long, long time. It seemed like I had new hair growth–especially in the crown of my head. But what I knew for sure was that my existing hair gradually came in thicker and stronger.

As a professional barber in Salt Lake City, I have several clients who use Propecia. All of them tell me that they are having positive results and that they will continue taking it to maintain the progress they have achieved.  It is so much easier to use than Rogaine or Minoxidil which are messy topical applications which have to be applied morning and night.  It is very easy to take the tiny Propecia pill with your vitamins.

Propecia is the first pill that effectively treats male pattern hair loss on the vertex or crown of the head and anterior mid-scalp area. Propecia is an oral medication that you take once a day, with or without food, with or without medication, morning or night-it just doesn’t matter. You just need to take it. Propecia (finasteride), available only by prescription, is an exciting weapon in the battle against male pattern hair loss. Propecia is for use by MEN ONLY and should NOT be used by women or children.

Finasteride is used as a treatment for both male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia or enlargement of the prostate gland. It contains an enzyme, which inhibits the conversion of testosterone to dihyrdrotetosterone.  What is dihydrotestosterone? It is a male sex hormone that is responsible for the stimulation of development of male characteristics, which includes the male organs and growth of body hair. An overdrive of dihydrotestosterone or DHT can lead to shrinking of the hair follicles. It helps stop the conversion of testosterone to DHT.  Researches have shown that it can effectively lower the DHT levels in the scalp by up to 60%.

Finasteride is the medical name and the more common commercial brands are Propecia and Proscar.

Considering that it stimulates testosterone in the body, Finasteride is only prescribed for men. It increases the level of testosterone in the system, which could also lead to a decrease in size of the prostate and increases hair growth on the scalp.

DHT is believed to contribute to male pattern baldness by:  shortening of the growing phase of the hair,  progressive miniaturization of hair follicles and decreasing the number of visible hairs. Propecia works by inhibiting 5-Reductase, which inhibits the formation of DHT, the hormone that causes hair loss. Most importantly , Propecia helps grow natural hair, not just “peach fuzz,” and is as convenient to take as a vitamin: one pill a day.

Unlike Minoxidil, Finasteride comes in  1mg or 5 mg tablet form and needs a prescription from your doctor. This means you would not be able to simply go to the drugstore and ask for this medication. This treatment should be taken once a day or as prescribed by your doctor. If you are wondering if you should take this before or after a meal, no need to worry because you can take it either way.

Finasteride does not provide instant result. You will be able to see gradual hair growth after a few months of continuous in take of the medication. You may experience shedding of your old hair too on the first two to three months. This will make way for new hair to grow with a thicker regrowth. You will be able to see noticeable and optimum result after a year of continued use.

You should know that there are a number of possible side effects associated with this treatment, though these are very uncommon. I personally had no side effects whatsoever for the two years that I took it.  Of course, I followed the instructions carefully. I also took the 5 mg. size tablets rather than the 1 mg. tablets.  But your Doctor can advise you on how you should take Propecia.

If you are having thinning and balding challenges, I would advise you to seek out your Doctor and if he approves it for you—start on a proven path to much thicker and fuller hair. I recently started taking Propecia again and I am very optimistic about the future results I hope to achieve.
